The Disadvantages of Email
Nowadays, almost everyone has an email.
For a minimalist, every possession should be used only for the essentials.
👉 As for the email box, it is the minimalist's responsibility to use it well!
👉 However, it is easy to let unwanted emails and advertisements accumulate 😶
Note that a good part of these unwanted advertisements come from newsletters 😬
Newsletters
When we have an email box, we usually receive newsletters.
Newsletters are emails that companies send to sell us products.
Note that most of the advertisements, newsletters and unwanted emails in our mailbox did not arrive by chance.
👉 In fact, in the majority of cases, we agreed to receive them (sometimes without knowing it) 😤

How did spam emails end up in our mailbox?
There are many reasons, for example:
- Selling your email address by a company that owns your email (illegal but common)
- Signing up for a site with a hidden check mark to receive newsletters
- Hacking an email from your contacts
- Old purchases
⚠️ When I say purchases, I don't necessarily mean paid purchases. Indeed, some purchases were free but what did the companies ask in return? ... Your email 😐
You got it. When a company asks for your email. It's always with the goal of making you consume during the next advertisements that they will send you by email.
The Minimalist's Goal
➡️ The minimalist does not want to receive emails that do not interest him. ‼️
Therefore, in order to save time and increase productivity, he cleans his mailbox occasionally.

Clean our mailbox
➡️ For a minimalist, hasend of “cleaning” the mailbox. It is necessary to unsubscribe or unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters. And then delete them.

By unsubscribing from unwanted newsletters, this allows the minimalist to avoid receiving future spam emails. Thus allowing to:
- Save time
- Be more focused
- Be less disturbed
- Avoid consumer temptations
- Perform faster searches
⚠️ Don’t forget the minimalist philosophy, ”Less to make it More” 😉
Less of unnecessary emails received = More time saved!
Less of advertisements = More money saved.
Less of emails = More storage.
Less of emails = More simplicity when searching.
Sorting your mailbox
Nowadays, we are lucky that our mailbox performs an initial automatic sorting between good and bad emails. By eliminating bad emails in a secondary mailbox (spam).

This is excellent ✅
👉 On the other hand, it is rarely optimal! And it is logical:
For example, a few years ago you subscribed to a site that interested you a lot. Maybe at one time you liked receiving this content regularly. But let's say your desires have changed. Let's imagine that this content no longer interests you today.
👉 The automatic sorting of your email will not know from when this content became Spam.. Therefore, it continues to send you this content in your primary mailbox.
Additionally, it is also possible that your mailbox does not know how to differentiate between a junk email and a desirable email.
➡️ Therefore. The only way to stop wasting time on useless content. It is to unsubscribe and delete every unwanted email! 🔺
How to unsubscribe from a Newsletter?
Typically, newsletters include an unsubscribe link in every email received. Usually at the end of the email.
Note that it is a legal obligation to allow easy unsubscription.1
And there you have it, all that's left to do is unsubscribe 😉
What if it's spam?
If it is spam, indeed, I do not recommend clicking on links. Nor opening the email.
What you can do is in your mailbox. You report as spam and you block the sender.
In this case, messages from unwanted emails will no longer bother you.
Don't make the same mistakes

Once you have sorted, unsubscribed and deleted your junk mail. It would be wise not to receive any more junk mail in your mailbox 🤓
Therefore, it is important to take some extra precautions.
For example:
- Do not leave your email address on unreliable or insecure sites.
- Check privacy and notification settings when registering on new sites
- Keep a watchful eye on the pre-checked boxes that authorize the sending of newsletters (often not very visible)
👉 Keep in mind that the more sites you enter your email on, the greater the chances of receiving unwanted emails (or being hacked)!
Create a new email
One solution to receive fewer emails is to create a new secure email and only inform the necessary people.
To give my example, I had an email that I created as a teenager and after 15 years I was still receiving spam from old sites. To solve this problem, I created a new email and informed only my important contacts.
This trick helped me get rid of many newsletters. In a very short time.
Today, I open that old email 3-4 times a year to read my messages. If an important contact writes me, I tell them my email has changed.
Give old email to unimportant contacts
Another technique to be less bothered by unwanted emails is to give an old email that you no longer use. Or, to create a junk email.
There are situations where the company “forces” us to give our email without us wanting to.
For example, to book an attraction online, you have to give your email to receive the ticket. In this case, we prefer not to share our private email, because giving our private email means receiving advertisements from the attraction.
During these times, a technique to receive less emails is to give an old email that we open 3 to 4 times a year. In my case, it is my old teenage email.
Besides, to be honest, when someone asks me for my email and I don't see any point in giving it, I just make up a random email on the spot.
Pollution of an email
An important criterion that is less known to the general public, an e-mail…pollutes 😶

According to an article. A person who receives and sends about a hundred emails a day (this can go quickly with junk mail).
This would correspond to taking one plane flight per year between London and Bruges (Belgium).2
That is, about 200 kilometers by plane ✈️
This is the equivalent of 0.6 tonnes of CO2 wasted.
So you can understand why I laugh when I receive emails that say the following message.
”Think about the planet, avoid paper”.
By sending email ads non-stop 😏
Occupational risks related to e-mails
In the event of a hack, in addition to the pain of a privacy breach and the loss of private data, we must not forget that we also have our work email.
👉 Indeed, securing professional email is just as important as securing private email!
Therefore, you should be as careful with emails on your smartphone as you are with your computer at work, so as not to share sensitive data.
Conclusion
👉 For a minimalist, unwanted newsletters are a waste of time, money and productivity.
➡️ I suggest you take your smartphone or your computer to unsubscribe and delete all the emails and newsletters that do not suit you. 🔺
⚠️ Remember not to sign up or subscribe to new newsletters when registering on new sites.
If your email is very old and you receive too many spam emails. In this case, it is better to create a new email.
This technique will save you time and money. Plus, it's eco-friendly😉

How does this blog live?
Overall, this blog lives from sharing a frugal and/or minimalist lifestyle.
For the sake of transparency towards readers, all the products recommended are intended to make life cheaper and simpler.
Essentially, my only income from this blog comes from the training courses I conduct, promo codes for products I use, and donations readers make in exchange for neutral information.
About me
Faced with not very effective financial education, as was my case before. I actually decided to create this blog following a change in my life since my early adult life.
Compared to before, I was a person who consumed a lot until the day I understood that my consumption was making me sadder and poorer. From now on, I prioritize the minimum of my needs to be happy and achieve financial freedom.
Without realizing it, I also began to prioritize savings and investments to depend on a boss for as short a time as possible and to accelerate my personal projects.
For several years I have felt happy and I have become richer in a way that I would never have imagined given that I have an average salary in Switzerland.
It is for this purpose that I decided to create this blog. To share, learn and teach with others who seek freedom, simplicity and long-term wealth.
Are you rather minimalist or frugal Jonny?
I am both a minimalist and a frugalist. However, there are situations where I lean more towards an art of living.
To conclude, I think the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your life and I have found a balance between these lifestyles without reaching the extremes.
