How much money do you need in reserve?

If you've read my articles on the frugal mindset, you know that I emphasize that our life depends on 4 factors:

  • Luck
  • The opportunities
  • The unexpected
  • Our work
  • Your employer or your client stops paying you
  • An accident can force you to spend significant sums on medical care
  • A household appliance can be faulty and you urgently need to buy another one

In reality, this question depends on future expenses that we cannot control. Indeed, no one knows the future.

👉 Therefore, there is no precise answer 😶.

No one can know how much we will have to spend on unforeseen expenses! They are ”unforeseen”.

👉 Indeed, Having a lot of money in reserve is not the best solution either..

For what? Because our money reserve will be eaten up by inflation

For example, 100,000 CHF in a savings account today will most likely be worth less in 10 years 🤔

That is to say, if you spend on average 3,000 CHF per month for example. You would need to have between 9,000 CHF and 18,000 CHF in reserve.

In another example, TF1 in an article offers at least 5 months' salary1 .

4 month of reserve, is it enough? Life will answer me 😉

Saving can also pave the way for future projects.
For example, buying a house, financing studies, or even preparing for a comfortable retirement.

Life is always more motivating when you save for your personal projects.

Not to mention, good savings help reduce financial stress and improve our quality of life.

About me

Compared to before, I was a person who consumed a lot until the day I realized that my consumption made me sadder and poorer 😑

Now I prefer the minimum of my needs to be happy and achieve my financial freedom.

Without realizingI started to focus on saving and investing to depend on a boss for as little time as possible and to speed up my personal projects.

For several years I have felt happy and I have become richer in a way that I would never have imagined given that I have an average salary in Switzerland.

It is for this purpose that I decided to create this blog. In order to share and learn with other people who seek freedom and simplicity 😉

Are you rather minimalist or frugal Jonny?

I am as minimalist as I am frugalist. However, there are situations where I lean more towards an art of life.

To conclude, I think the most important thing is to feel comfortable in your lifestyle 😊
